Wendy Orr is the author of this amazing Bronze Age historical fiction. It starts off on a tiny island in the Mediterranean Sea, overshadowed by the mighty Minoans of nearby Crete.
Aissa is the daughter of the island’s ruler, the Lady. But she was born imperfect with one extra thumb on each hand, no more than flaps of skin. But if she is imperfect how can she rule the people when she is older? So her father, the chief, takes his knife and cuts off the flaps of skin so Aissa only has two half-moons scars below her regular thumbs. But the Lady still refuses too except her and commands she be thrown of the cliff.
Aissa survives but what will happen to a small girl with no family, who can’t talk?
